General Science | Biology | Chemistry | Environmental science | Horticulture | Physics

General Science
Teacher In Charge: Mrs D Fern
Subject Progression: Yr 9 Yr 10 Yr 11 Yr 12 Yr 13

Science is a core subject that involves the investigation of the living, physical, material and technological components of the environment and making sense of them in logical and creative ways. Learning in science is fundamental to understanding the world in which we live and work. It helps people clarify ideas, ask questions, test explanations through measurement and observation and use their findings to establish the worth of an idea. Science at Year 9 and 10 leads on to science, biology, chemistry and physics at year 12 and 13.

Biology
Teacher In Charge: Mrs A Thompson
Subject Progression: Yr 9 Yr 10 Yr 11 Yr 12 Yr 13

Biology is an exciting and stimulating subject where new knowledge is constantly being added as new technologies develop. This is particularly evident in the genetic and biotechnological field. We aim to develop students' knowledge and appreciation of their own biological makeup, and of the greater living world that they are part of, emphasising particularly the special features of the New Zealand environment. Integrated with this learning we aim to increase students' abilities in a wide range of scientific skills, and to assist them to develop attitudes that will enable them to make informed biological decisions.

Biology is available as a subject at year 11 for those who wish to specialise early in this subject. By the end of Year 13, successful students have learned to carry out scientific investigations independently, to make informed judgements about contemporary biological issues, and to have a good knowledge of modern biotechnological techniques.

Chemistry
Teacher In Charge: Ms N Meyer
Subject Progression: Yr 9 Yr 10 Yr 11 Yr 12 Yr 13

Chemistry is a subject composed of both theoretical and practical based subject material. Students taking this subject at the senior level will have the opportunity to develop a range of scientific skills. Studying chemistry at this level enables students to realise that an understanding of chemistry is fundamental in such diverse fields as medicine, agriculture, manufacturing and engineering. Studying chemistry allows individuals to raise questions and debate issues related to chemistry, society and the environment.

Environmental Science
Teacher In Charge: Miss L MacGilloway
Subject Progression: Yr 9 Yr 10 Yr 11 Yr 12 Yr 13

Horticulture
Teacher In Charge: Mr M McKercher
Subject Progression: Yr 9 Yr 10 Yr 11 Yr 12 Yr 13

Students who choose to study horticulture learn what is involved in growing and propagating a wide variety of plants. An enjoyable and integral part of the course is the practical work involving the garden plots, glasshouse, tunnel house, shade house and hydroponic unit that make up the horticulture plot. Here students learn the skills relating to tool use, propagation and plant growth, as well as the general scientific skills required for success in this subject.

At Year 10, general horticultural skills and knowledge are taught. By the end of Year 13, successful students are able to independently plan, grow and market horticultural produce using the knowledge they have gained of market forces and primary production.

Physical science
Teacher In Charge: Mrs D Fern
Subject Progression: Yr 9 Yr 10 Yr 11 Yr 12 Yr 13

Physical science is comprised of NCEA Level 1 chemistry and physics Achievement Standards. It is designed to cater to those students who intend to study physics and chemistry at Year 12. Students intending to take this course should have done well in science in Years 9 and 10.

Physics
Teacher In Charge: Mrs D Fern
Subject Progression: Yr 9 Yr 10 Yr 11 Yr 12 Yr 13

Physics is an interesting and challenging subject that combines practical and problem solving skills with academic content. Physics concepts can be applied to many everyday situations and knowledge of physics is also essential for many occupations and tertiary courses. Students successfully completing NCEA Level 1 Science may opt for Physics at Year 12, which in turn lays the foundation for Year 13 studies. An interesting and diverse range of topics are covered in Senior Physics including mechanics, waves, electricity and radio-activity.
