Dear Parents and Caregivers
Welcome to
this, our first newsletter for Term 3. We regard this term as our serious
working term and try to minimise disruption to classroom programmes over the
next ten weeks. I have spoken to the students at our assemblies and have urged
them to set personal goals for this term to ensure that they have good choices
and opportunities for further study and employment.
ATTENDANCE
In order to
maximise teaching and learning time we have recently changed our bell times.
Our form classes now meet just once a day, at 8.45am. This time is important
for student administration and pastoral care. You will have noticed that we are
having something of a “crack down” on late arrivals at present and do ask that
parents support us by getting their children to school on time.
NEW STAFF
The school is pleased to
welcome our newest staff member, Mrs Paula Hutcheon, to Hawera. Mrs Hutcheon
and her husband have moved to Taranaki from South Canterbury and she is
teaching English and Japanese.
PAID UNION (PPTA) MEETING Tuesday 24 August
2010 – students released early
I
have recently been advised by the Post Primary Teachers’ Association (PPTA)
that “the Executive of the PPTA has directed members to attend a round of paid
union meetings”. These meetings are held under Section 26 of the Employment
Relations Act 2000. Staff of Hawera High School will therefore be attending a
meeting on TUESDAY 24 AUGUST
at 1.00 pm. As teaching staff at Hawera High School are
members of the PPTA, this means that normal
classes cannot be held and the STUDENTS WILL BE RELEASED at 12.15 p.m.
A
study room will be available for students who wish to work at school. These
students should report to the hall at 1.00 p.m. The buses will run at the usual
time after school. Thank you in advance
for your co-operation.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
INVITATION
Our newly
elected Board of Trustees has settled into its role. The trustees have taken
advantage of the excellent training opportunities available and are doing a
commendable job balancing the varied needs of the school on behalf of all of
our students. Parents are reminded that the Board of Trustees meetings are
public meetings and that all are welcome to attend. The Hawera High School Board
of Trustees meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7.00pm.
CAREERS EXPO
This year we
will transport our senior students to the New Plymouth based Taranaki Careers
Expo on Monday 23 August. This will allow our students to access the full range
of careers information available at this large event. Good careers advice is
important in helping students to make good subject choices and to maintain good
motivation at school. Your child should have asked you to sign a permission
slip for this free trip. Please do complete these forms as we are unable to
include your child without this permission.
STUDENTS’ MEDICAL INFORMATION UPDATE
We are currently
updating our medical records for our students. If anything has changed
regarding medications or new conditions that we need to be aware of please let
the office know. This is potentially a very serious matter so please can you
attend to this as soon as possible.
NZQA EXAMINATION FEES
A reminder that NZQA
examination fees and financial assistance application forms and payment need to be received by the school by Friday
27th August. Please see the previous
newsletter for details. If payment is
not made by this date NZQA apply a late fee of $50.00.
GREG MURPHY’S VISIT
The school was
visited by well known driver Greg Murphy on the 29th June. Mr Murphy
presented a road safety message to our senior students before meeting with our
student leaders. The visit was sponsored
by the NZ Motor Traders’ Association.
NOEL LEEMING SPONSORSHIP THANKS
Hawera High School
wishes to thank Noel Leeming Hawera for their generous support following their recent in-store
promotion. The store raised in excess of
$9,400.00 for the school. These funds are being used to provide Educational
opportunities for students who could not otherwise participate.
TARANAKI SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
Each year the Taranaki Scholarship Trust Board awards scholarships to
support Taranaki students study at a tertiary level. The value of the
scholarship is $1000 with students required to obtain 97 L3 credits across five
subjects. This year 66 monetary scholarships were awarded while a further 43
students gained scholarships without emolument (because other scholarships have
been obtained).
The Hawera High School Taranaki Scholarship recipients for 2010 are Hannah Keller, Tara Van der Sar, Kent Weir, Lana Bluett, Adam Goodwin, Shauni Bacon and
Gareth Fraser.

DRUG DOG
INSPECTION
On Tuesday 3rd
August Elite Dog Services conducted an inspection of a number of classrooms at
the school. The school will carry out inspections of this type from time to time
in order to ensure that our school remains a safe environment for all students
and staff.
STUDENTS’ PROPERTY
We continue to
have thefts of small electronic devices (cell phones, iPods & MP3 players)
occurring at the school. We have been working with the local police and have
had some success in catching those responsible. Despite these successes we cannot guarantee the safety of these
devices and we ask that students do not bring them to school.
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Smokefree Rockquest Success
Congratulations to ‘Pedro & the Lepers’ - Ben Dixon (Drums, Guitar & Vocals),
James le Quesne (Guitar &
Vocals) and Cory Robertson (Bass

the TSB Showplace in New Plymouth. These

SPORTS NEWS
First XV Rugby Trip to Brisbane
During the first week of the July
school holidays the Southern RFC
sponsored Hawera High School First XV travelled to Brisbane to compete in
the Southern Skies Rugby Tournament.
The first day’s games saw Hawera
play Paraparaumu College and host school Brisbane Boys’ College. Hawera won 24-5 against Paraparaumu and drew
with Brisbane BC. Day two meant an early
game against Graeme College from South Africa (who had some big lads) and a
close loss 10 – 6. The afternoon game was against the other Brisbane school
Grammar and after a long hot wait between the two matches the boys were unable
to sustain the same intensity as the other games and lost 40 -0 to a different
Brisbane Grammar team than the day before.
Day three was a rest day for all involved and meant a trip to Dreamworld
that all enjoyed. Day four and the last
round robin game against Takapuna Grammar in the morning. The reserves were given a good run but
unfortunately the team went down 10-26.
The afternoon match was a repeat of the morning but this time the game
meant playing Takapuna Grammar for a place in the semi-finals, a spirited effort
by Hawera destined a 29-0 win.
Day five semi-final time and a
repeat game against Graeme College, unfortunately the Hawera team couldn’t
repeat their effort from the previous afternoon and went down 17-5. The final game of the Tournament for Hawera
saw another match against Brisbane Grammar.
The Hawera boys played with pride and passion but just fell short 26-24
and finished the tournament 4th and best New Zealand team and happy
in the knowledge that they had drawn with tournament winners Brisbane Boys’
College.
Brent
Landers, Tim Myers and Daniel Hornby all played consistently well during
the week and were named in the tournament.
Hawera High School would like to thank
its sponsors Southern
RFC for their support which helped make
this trip possible.
Taranaki Rugby Representatives
Congratulations to the following students who
have been selected to Taranaki teams.
U14 – Jade
Taylor, Daniel Waite
U16 – Ben Plumtree, Leroy Te Ngahue, George Edwards.
Wanganui Collegiate Sports Exchange
This was a great success. Thank you to everyone
who competed, coached, or umpired/refereed the games. We also appreciated the
assistance of our Sports Council members who helped prepare the food and tidied
up afterwards. Thank you also to Yarrows
(The Bakers) Ltd for their
generous discounts on the food.
Hopefully this event will become an annual
exchange. Wanganui Collegiate are keen to host Hawera High School next year and
were very complimentary of the day and the spirit in which the games were
played.
