Curriculum

Curriculum Overview

Hawera High School offers a comprehensive range of subjects to meet the needs and aspirations of its pupils and community. Subject choices allow for academic challenge, vocational opportunity, cultural strength, social and physical development.

A broad base of subjects at Year 9, the majority of which are compulsory, ensures students have the knowledge and experience to make sound subject choices as they progress through the levels.

Hawera High School aims for all students to reach their greatest possible potential. Skills recovery in literacy and numeracy is offered at Year 9 to those students who need assistance at this level. A number of extension programmes are in place for more able students.

At Year 9, except for a choice of language study, the whole course is compulsory. The compulsory element reduces as students move through the year levels when at year 13, as they work towards their future goals, there are no compulsory subjects.

Courses in Year 11, 12, and 13 are multi-level. A student at Year 12 or 13 may study any of the levels below provided they meet the subject entry requirements.

A comprehensive programme of subject advice and guidance is in place to help students make sensible and realistic subject choices. Parents are encouraged to be involved and must approve proposed courses.
