Badminton is one of the lunch time recreation activities
and is very popular. There is an emphasis on developing skills and
enjoyment. Teams are chosen to compete against other schools in
the annual exchanges.

A fast, skilful game, basketball is a sport that caters for all body
types. Teams represent the school in local leagues and interschool
sport exchanges. Players provide footwear, we provide the uniforms.
Hawera High School participates in local and national competitions.
Practice times are usually before school. If you want to be the next Michael Jordan, start your
career at Hawera High School.
Currently we have four boys’ basketball teams in competition at Hawera
High School:
Hawera High School Boys A Team entered into the HBA
League and the National Zone Qualifying Tournaments.
Hawera High School Boys B Team entered into the HBA
League. Many of the students also play in Hawera Basketball
Association's age group competition. All teams will be required to do duty including refereeing
bench on the nights of their games and canteen and hall prep duty
to contribute to fundraising. Uniforms are provided. All students will have the opportunity to trial
for age teams run by the Hawera Basketball Association.
Currently we have one girls’ basketball
teams in competition at Hawera High School: Hawera High School Girls A Team entered into the HBA

All students of Physical Education are expected
to participate in the cross-country championships. The course we
use is the “Showground’s” which is demanding but
a good cross-country course. All girls and junior boys complete
3km and intermediate and senior boys complete 4.5km.

The team enters up to 5 interschool events during
Terms 1, 2 and 4. There are show jumping, dressage and cross-country
jumping disciplines available with height levels from 80cm to 1.2m.
The school provides some uniform items and transport is pooled.
Entry fees range from $10.00 to $20.00 with some subsidy available
in some events. Students of all ages and from all levels in the
school are involved in equestrian events.You need your own horse or
horses to participate in this team.

Hawera High School provides opportunities for students
to take part in golf at both an introductory level during Junior
Activity Week, and in our own Championship event. The School Championships
have been held over the last sixteen years at one of the local golf
courses on a rotational basis. The best players are selected to
represent the school at the TSSSA Regional Championships and also
for interschool events.

The school tries to field 2 - 4 teams in the regional competition.
• Games are played in Stratford or New Plymouth (sand/water)
turfs.
• Grading system applies: Girls A, Boys A, Boys B, Girls B.
• Mixed teams play in Boys B and can elevate to Boys A
• Competition commences start of term 2 and completes end
of Term 3.
• Games play Thursday, Friday nights, and Sunday mornings
(based on grades).
• Secondary School tournament is held in August.
• Practice times depend on coaches.
• Uniform provided (with bond)
• Playing equipment (stick, mouth guard, shin pads) players
responsibility to provide.

The school fields up to 12 netball teams in the local
competition. Grade levels are Competition through to Youth Grade. Trials
are held early March with competition beginning normally early May.
All games are on Saturdays. Netballers are required to do duty and
umpiring on occasions. Practice times depend on the coach but are normally
lunchtimes or after school. Uniform is provided and fees vary
depending on grade.

Four
boys and two girls’ teams compete in a Taranaki wide competition.
Games for boys’ teams begin early April and girls’ in
early June. Game venues range from Waverley, Patea to Opunake, New
Plymouth and Waitara. Being a South Taranaki school a great deal
of travelling is necessary. Practice times are Tuesday and Thursday
3.30 - 5.00 pm at Hicks Park.
Hawera High School has its own Rugby Club with an
active committee promoting the game. Interschool fixtures are with schools in the Manawatu
& Wanganui.
The
Taranaki Rugby Union through its Development Programme, provides
coaching personnel for all grades when requested. Hawera High School players are regularly represented
in The Taranaki Secondary School Teams (boys and girls) and Taranaki
Under 16 Teams. As well, players are nominated for the Hurricanes
Secondary Schools’ Coaching Camps. The club is grateful for parental involvement in coaching
the teams.

While, Hawera High School houses many talented Rugby League players, due to the
strong programme and commitment to rugby, League is run an adhoc basis. Although we can field a
strong team often there is little competition. However, the Taranaki Rugby League Development
Officer in connection with Sport Taranaki is working to rectify this situation.

Girls’ soccer is enjoying a revival at Hawera
High School. Practices are held at lunchtime once a week and games
after school on Wednesdays. Players of all abilities and experience
are welcome. The emphasis is on enjoyment and improving skills
within a supportive and fun atmosphere.

Small-bore rifle shooting can be a serious sport, a casual hobby,
or something in between. Students from the school are welcomed into the Hawera Club
which caters for junior members. They take part in the competitions provided by and within the club.

Interested students with experience make up the team and reserves are taken.
Students provide their own equipment. Everyone has fun and a great time.

Grades include Men’s A and B, mixed A and B
and Women’s A sections. • This split season is important for high school
teams to consider particularly if students plan to go away for further
education.
• Registration is usually two weeks before.
• A manager is required.
• Footwear must be worn.
• No sprigs or metal cleats or spikes.
• All teams are required to pay a subscription of $200 team.
• A team uniform is required - usually a t-shirt with playing
numbers on the back or alternatively on both sleeves. Matching uniform
shorts are optional.
• Teams must be familiar with module rules. Teams will be required to provide referees for some
games.
Largely independent entry by students - submitting
their own teams of single sex or mixed gender.
