Summer and Winter Sports
Students are encouraged to become involved in
the many sporting activities that are part of school life. There
are varied opportunities that meet the needs of all students.
The sports co-ordinator, Mrs Jan Roberts organises and promotes activities.
There are regular interschool fixtures. A number of other events
are arranged for single teams and the school participates in all Taranaki Secondary School Sports Association events.

House Competitions
| Competitions Entered: |
• Linnell Shield
• Various School Trophies |
| Teacher In Charge: |
Miss P Hurley / Mrs J Roberts |
The Linnell Shield is competed for annually
in a range of sporting and cultural events. Students are allocated
to one of four colour group ‘houses’ when they enter
the school. House captains provide leadership and assist with entries
for events.
Many events have trophies awarded for the competition.
These trophies have been donated by past pupils and many have a
long history. Competition during interhouse events is keen and students
often dress up in house colours to show their support. The highlight
of the year is the Athletics Competition when the majority of pupils
participate.
TOPEC (Taranaki Outdoor Pursuits & Education Centre)
| Teacher In Charge: |
Mr M Cleaver |
TOPEC is a 5-day course/camp experience offered to all year 10 students as the
basis of the Outdoor Education Programme at Hawera High School.
TSB TOPEC has been in operation since 1986 and has provided valuable learning experiences to
over a thousand Taranaki students each year since then. The Centre aims to "provide challenging
outdoor experiences for the secondary scholl pupils of Taranaki".
The site is ideal as it is within easy travelling distance from Hawera, (8km south of New Plymouth)
in the parkland by the "Meeting of the Waters" - Waiwakaiho River. The site provides a variety of
suitable environments for outdoor activities - basically from the mountain to the sea! The distance
from the main roads gives it an atmosphere of relative isolation and tranquility.
Qualified instructors are with the students on all activities and students will be taught specific
skills which may include orienteering, rock climbing, abseiling, kayaking, canoeing, rafting, sailing,
navigation, mountaineering, snow caving, tramping and bush craft.
Students will also develop personal qualities of respect, responsibility, confidence, cooperation
and concern for the well-being of others. A developed awareness of, and respect for, our wonderful
natural environment, is an outcome of this experience.
A feature of the 5 day experience, is the overnight camp. This may include building and sleeping in
a snow cave; tramping to one of the many huts on the mountain; tenting or bivouacing in the bush; a
kayaking expedition and tenting on the riverbank.
· Hawera High School offers three camps each year and costs the student
aproximately $160.00.
· Clothing & equipment lists are issued early so students have time to gather the items together.
· A maximum of 40 students is taken on any one camp.
· Apart from the qualified instructors, Hawera High School staff members carry out supervision during the
day and every night.
